WEAPONS!

WEAPONS FOR THE FIGHT!!!

This journey of overcoming obesity in my life has been a battle, a fight. Thus, I call this "Weapons for the Fight" because I want to give you some of the basic tools (weapons) that have made this a successful journey for me. I go into further details about these tools in the videos that I make on my YouTube Channel http://www.youtube.com/user/thequeenliana?feature=mhum

1. THE POWER OF THE FIRST DECISION

In my opinion, the first decision to start this journey is the most important. When you truly make up your mind that this matters to you and you know why this change is necessary, you will do well. I am not saying that you will not have struggles along the way but you can always refer back to that moment when you decided that getting healthy was about life or death and that you were going to CHOOSE LIFE!

2. LIFESTYLE CHANGES

Don't live in the extremes. When you live in the extremes, it is rarely lasting. This journey is not just about losing weight, it is about changing your life. I know many people who have done extreme diets, lost the weight and then gained it back because they could not maintain the extreme diet. They did not learn how to create a lifestyle change for themselves and thus, they went back to their old habits. This process is about making lasting, lifestyle changes.

3. PLAN AHEAD

-shop your meals
-separate your food into baggies and containers
-when you cook, portion out your food for the next day’s lunch or dinner
-put water in your trunk
-pack your meals and snacks for the day
-always have an exercise bag ready
-input exercise schedule on your calendar like anything else that is important to you

4. KNOWING WHAT TO EAT AND WHEN TO EAT IT

Eat heavier foods earlier in the day...load up on fruits and veggies..eat products high in protein (like beans and fish)...eliminate read meat if possible.

5. DIET + EXERCISE = BALANCE

It is not an either or. If you want to lose weight and tone the body, you must eat well and exercise. Sure, you can lose weight if u just change your eating but you want to tone as well and that requires exercise (especially some weight training.) However, you cannot continue to eat horribly and think that working out will do the trick; It won't! I see people in the gym 7 days a week and they still have that belly because they leave the gym and eat however they desire.

6. KNOW YOURSELF

Know which foods in your life cannot be substituted and which foods can. Then, be strategic as to when you will eat them or eat them in smaller portions. Otherwise, it is good to find food substitutes, such as baked or popped chips instead of regular fried.

7. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE WHO VALUE YOUR LIFESTYLE CHANGES

The people you surround yourself with will make a huge impact on your journey. I know that everyone does not have the best support system but, at least, limit the time you spend with the people who will try to convince you that "loosing weight and focusing on your health are not a big deal." Some people will say things like, "one piece of cake will not hurt you." You don't need to spend extended amounts of time around those types of people. You need friends and family who will make this as easy of a process for you as possible. It is difficult enough in and of itself. You don't need extra baggage.

8. DO YOUR RESTAURANT RESEARCH

Do the research and find your favorite places to eat out at that has meals that you know that you can eat. That way, you have the power to suggest restaurants when you go out with your friends. Also, look for new healthy restaurants that you can introduce to your friends so that you can show them that there are other options that are also tasty.

9. IPODS ARE YOUR FRIEND

Workout to some good, inspirational music. My best workouts happen when I want to quit and a song comes on that gives me that extra boost to continue...alot of Gospel music has that impact on me.

10. WORDS OF INSPIRATION

Have your favorite quotes, sayings, or scriptures handy or memorized. Self talk and prayers to God have taken me a long ways on this journey. Remember, this is a battle of the mind before anything else. If you are strengthened in your mind, you can go far.

11. DO THIS FOR YOU

Do not be pressured to do this for anyone else. It will only last and be beneficial if you are doing it for yourself and not to please others. Trust me, others will reap from the fruit of your life. It’s inevitable. Live to honor God and people will be blessed in the process.
